You have a choice to make today. Before you do, give yourself a well-deserved MELT DOWN MOMENT.
Scream in the shower, run around the yard, kick a pile of dirt, punch a pillow… do whatever you need to do to release the frustration (Without hurting yourself or anyone else, of course!).
Then, come back here and make the choice.
Here it is, you can either binge on Netflix (I’m guilty, I should buy their stock) and eat all the quarantine snacks in the house (I slayed that challenge days ago!)…
… OR, you can start something today that will help get you out of your current situation and make you feel more secure about your finances.
The solution: Freelancing.
Let me be the first to tell you, working as a freelancer will help you financially stabilize your situation. Freelancing kept me from going into financial ruin when my husband, Steve (pictured here) and I moved to a new city and I couldn’t find a full-time position.
Steve is a quadriplegic and we have expenses outside those of a traditional family. Needless to say, I was worried.
That was nearly a decade ago, and the good news today is the world is shifting to a remote workforce. Freelancing and remote working are not strange concepts anymore. You have options: you already have the skills businesses need, or you have the ability to learn new in-demand skills, or you can build a highly-skilled team and manage projects.
What exactly is a freelancer? What kind of jobs are available?
Many people don’t know what a freelancer does. I used to think it meant stuffing and addressing envelopes.
Let me tell you, it’s virtually an endless list. Practically every administrative and business-oriented job can now be a remote position. For example, customer service, inventory management, order fulfillment, writing, editing, marketing, data analysis, social media marketing, graphic design, writing business letters, helping professionals stay organized, accounting, bookkeeping, emailing, follow up for sales, photography, teaching, creating PowerPoint presentations, making videos, website design and web admin. Those are just off the top of my head as I write this.
I once saw a job posted from a guy who was writing an apology letter to his girlfriend and he needed someone to edit it so he didn’t look foolish. (That is a fun assignment!)
I have no idea where to start.
That was me back in 2010. I spent weeks trying to figure things out. I registered on the few sites that were available and spent way too much money bidding on jobs. I didn’t have a strategy or any idea how to be successful. But I wasn’t giving up. My family was counting on me and I have an adversity to debt. It drives me crazy to be in debt and unemployment is the fastest way to get into debt.
Aren’t a lot of businesses closing?
Many business types have been forced to shut down temporarily, especially in the hospitality and retail industries. But your local businesses and small and mid-size businesses don’t want to lose everything they have because of this crisis. They need help and they need people with experience, talent, and ideas. That’s you and me!
I’m already on strategy calls with clients brainstorming ideas and making sure they stay in touch with their current customers.
I searched the freelancer sites I use this morning and there are thousands upon thousands of job postings. Businesses need help!
Jo Lynn, where are you today with your freelancing business?
First, I work hard but I absolutely love what I do. My husband and I now own a home in a little coastal city in Florida. We just bought it in December 2019. Prior to that, we moved every two years or so to be near family and friends, and to see parts of the country we have never seen. As a freelancer, I can work from anywhere.
I’ve had hundreds of clients. I’ve broadened my skills to include more in-demand skills, and I get to choose who I work for! I don’t have to work for someone who is short tempered or critical or impossible to get along with. My clients respect me and my experience. They trust me and we have great relationships.
The website you are on right now is one of my business websites. I built it when I didn’t even know how to design a website. Once I studied web design, I redesigned the site and optimized it for search engines. Today, I use it as a client lead generator. And now one of the things I do as a freelancer is design websites. Here are a few examples of my favorites:
